Nourishment for Body and Soul
— Charlene Pulsonetti
Since 1974, the Ramona Senior Center has been serving the community by providing an array of engaging activities, social opportunities and nutritious meals to senior citizens.
According to Executive Director Lora Cicalo, the center sees anywhere from 45 to 70 visitors daily — depending upon
the activities planned and menu for the day.
Located at 434 Aqua Ln., the center has a team of staff and volunteers, who prepare lunch Monday through Friday and host fun games, exercise programs and classes for everything from lace-making and crochet, to how to use a computer.
“I would say our chair yoga program and bingo are the most popular activities,” Cicalo says.
Throughout the year, the center hosts multiple fundraising events including, the popular Rib & Chicken Fest, which in 2018 served more than 1,000 visitors. The next Rib & Chicken Fest is planned for June 22, and volunteers are always welcome to lend a hand in preparations. Proceeds benefit the center’s nutrition program.
The center also operates Ramona Meals on Wheels, a program that provides hearty, nutritious meals to homebound seniors in Ramona and the backcountry. Delivery drivers visit three times a week, providing socialization for recipients and a wellness check-in. Visit ramonaseniorcenter.com.
“We’re always open to meeting new people who need a nutritious meal, would like to meet friends, or help volunteer,” says Cicalo, who notes that providing meals and socialization to prevent isolation is the center’s primary goal.
