“Cowboy” is a Holstein Friesian steer living under the care of Serenity Acres Horse Rescue owner Lindsay Crouse. At 4 years old, Cowboy enjoys a peaceful existence — free to roam the Ramona countryside, surrounded by folks awed by his size and kind spirit.

“I fell in love with him.” Crouse laughs, recalling the first time they met. “He gave me a big kiss, his tongue wrapped around my arm.”

At 3,000 pounds and 6 feet, 4 inches — measured from withers to hoof — Cowboy is unusually large for his breed. It’s been about a year since Crouse last pulled out the tape measure to check. She notes that he isn’t too keen on it — perhaps he enjoys the mystery just as much as everyone else.

If his gentle nuzzles, calm expression and dancing steps are any indication, Cowboy is enjoying his serene
surroundings.
